Cambration March 2012 Newsletter

Renovations are underway!

March 2012 already… and Cambrian Pharmacy has been busy. Cambrian Pharmacy has been working behind the scene for many months on an exciting project that entails a store renovation, new floor layout, shelves, paint, exciting new products, and all with a new look and feel. And it is now coming to fruition.

Why, you may ask?

Some customers may ask, why renovate? Cambrian Pharmacy has seen multiple changes since its humble beginnings in the 1500 square feet in 1959 to the current location since 1991. How we cater to our customers has also changed over the last 50 years, from a small corner drug store to a pharmacy that now provides custom compounds, multiple complimentary remedies, nutritional products, along with natural and organic products. As we enter into the new look for Cambrian Pharmacy we will present health care to you, our customer, as we believe health should be; giving you the choice of eastern, western, or complimentary medicine and the ability to combine different treatments to suit you.

We remain strong to our mission statement that 'Cambrian Pharmacy is the leading provider of traditional and integrative health solutions. We provide complimentary health choices, customized medicine and education, in a caring customer focused environment.'

In order to provide the education and the customer service you deserve we are expanding the experts that we have available to help with your integrative health solutions. On staff currently we have a master herbalist, holistic nutritionist, Naturopathic doctor, pharmacists and specialized compounding pharmacy techs. We are also adding cosmeticians that are trained in the benefits of natural and organic skin care and cosmetics. As we respond to a changing world around us, we bring new and exciting changes to you. We look forward to sharing our pharmacy with you.

One of the new changes is our new logo design

Another exciting change in the store will be the expansion of the compounding lab. Creating customized medications for our customers is a great service we provide. As compounded medications can be customized for you specifically, possibly changing it to a liquid, capsule, or topical cream. Flavours can also be customized making it more palatable for both young and old. Cambrian is also building a private consultation room. This will serve to provide better customer service and privacy for individual counselling with our specialty staff.

March Recipe

Try out this cereal recipe from our holistic nutritionist on staff at Cambrian. This breakfast cereal recipe makes 3 weeks of single ½ cup servings and is comparable to the texture of oatmeal. Store either in the fridge or freezer compartment.

3 cups ground flax meal (“Gold Top Organics” Berry Blend flax, has a nice mild berry flavor & extra antioxidants from berry extracts. Golden or brown flax will give it a stronger taste)

2 cups quick cooking oatmeal flakes

2 cups Vanilla protein powder (AOR vanilla protein powder is a great one – available in store)

1 cup whole shelled hemp seeds or hemp bits. (avoid hemp powder as the powder doesn’t have a good flavor or texture – available in store)

1 cup chopped walnuts or almonds (Use plain unsalted, no added oil, unroasted nuts)

1 cup shredded unsweetened coconut (Try to get un-sulphured coconut flakes, available in health food stores)

4 tablespoons Chia Seed (use black Chia seed or white Chia such as Salba brand – available in store)

4 tablespoons Cinnamon

Mix all ingredients in a large mixing bowl, & then transfer into an empty container tub for storage. In the morning, spoon out a ½ cup portion and add a small amount of boiling water to the bowl, and top with ½ cup of any kind of unsweetened berries.

Approximate nutrients per ½ cup serving:

270 calories 16.5 g fat 20 g carbs, including 8 g fiber & 14.5 g protein

Per serving with the ½ cup berries (average between raspberries, strawberries, blueberries):

300 calories 16.5 g fat 28 g carbs, including 11 g fiber & 15 g protein

This is filling, has a good amount of fiber, protein, healthy plant based omega-3’s and healthy fat, vitamins, minerals & antioxidants. * It is not sweet, if you like it sweeter, you can add a small amount of Xylitol, or Stevia. Nice healthy plant based fats. There is a small amount of saturated fat from the coconut, but in a ½ cup serving its only 2 teaspoons of coconut. The plant based fats help reduce inflammation and are good for joint, skin, and hair health.

Good quality fat, fiber, and protein help slow the digestion of carbohydrates, helping to balance blood sugar, and keep you fuller longer. Cinnamon may help reduce blood sugar spikes.

You can custom make your own version depending on what your favorite nuts & spices are. For example, people with blood sugar issues can reduce the oatmeal amount to 1 cup, and increase the chia seed and cinnamon. The more chia seed used, the thicker it will be. Add more hot water to thin out. Enjoy!
